The 2008 "Steve Haynie" Opener

Before The Shoot:

In response to the Chuck Fohlbrook suggestion that the winner of this shoot have his name attached to it the following year, this shoot becomes the Steve Haynie Opener for 2008. I think Chuck will be motivated to do just a little bit better this year!
Great idea Chuck, (who was the Runner Up last year)!

I will, of course, defend my title with dedication and intensity. I expect that eventually my name, I mean, the winners name, will become the permanent name of this event. Of course that can only happen if I, I mean, the winner dominates this shoot year after year...Smile and "bring it on" - come out and shoot.

After the Shoot:

The 12 Gauge Event

The 12 Gauge Event bodes well for the reigning Champion, as Steve Haynie posted an event-best 98, as did Geoffrey Peters. Haynie then went on to dispatch Peters in the shoot-off for Gun Champ. It looked like "The 2008 Steve Haynie Opener" was headed towards a 2009 edition after one event. But hold on...it "ain't over 'till it's over". Peters took Runner Up and Andre Williams took third with his 96. Chuck Folhbrook posted a 96 and took AA1, David Lee posted a 95 for A1, Chuck Farnham posted an uncharacteristic 93 for B1, and Robert Vazquez posted a 92 to take C1.Chuck Reller's excellent 95 earned him D1, though we expect his tenure in D Class will be short with scores like that! Newcomer Andrew Wharton took E Class honors in his first registered shoot, and we hope he'll join us again!

The 20 Gauge Event

The second event was the 20 Gauge, and this time the sailing wasn't as smooth for the reigning Opener Champ. For mysterious and unknown reasons his score was reported as a 93, dropping him from the event titles. I am investigating to determine if there was any clerical errors made in the posting of the scores (in lieu of any believable excuses). Meanwhile, we are forced to report that the Event Winners were Chuck Fohlbrook as Champion with a 97, Geoffrey Peters as Runner Up with a 95 (he's beginning to "Runner Up" a lot isn't he?), and the "Surprising Steve" Sagal as third with a very good 94. Class winners were Stunned Steve Haynie as A1 with 93, Michael Baranet as B1 with a 91, Myles Spodak as C1 with an outstanding 93, and Javier Caicedo earned D1 honors with his 77.

So at the halfway point in the race for the Opener Crown, it was very tight. Chuck Fohlbrook was leading, Steve Haynie was 2 back and Steve Hendren was 6 back, with two events remaining. Still up for grabs!

The 28 Gauge Event

The 28 Gauge Event is Chuck Fohlbrooks "ace-in-the-hole", and he didn't let it get away. Posting a 98, he added two targets to his lead over the defending champ Haynie, and 3 targets to his lead over Steve Hendren in third. Haynie's 96 did net him Runner Up (perhaps because Peters didn't shoot this event?), and 3rd went to Myles Spodak with an Outstanding 95! Hendren's 95 did net him A1, Chuck Farnham's 95 netted him B1, Andre Williams posted a 90 for C1 and a solid 89 took D1 for Javier Caicedo. A quickly improving Ellen Rieske posted a 53 to take the Lady's Champion title. Watch out for this one gents as the scores are coming up quickly!

Now it would come down to the 410 Event, but it was all over but the singing from that slightly overweight woman wearing the Viking garb.

The 410 Event

The little gun can be fickle, and from out of the blue, Howard Chin shows up and posts a 98 to take Gun Champion. We certainly congratulate Howard on this fine score, and some of us were glad he didn't show up for all four guns! Chuck Fohlbrook sealed his victory with a 96, meaning that he could only be beaten by a 100 by Haynie in the 410. Since the chance of a 100 in the 410 is fairly slim at any Markham event, Chuck was safe in planning his activities for the 2009 Opener at Markham Park. Fohlbrook's 96 did earn him event Runner Up, with Steve Hendren capturing 3rd with a 95. Hendren had now posted a 95 in the 12, 28 and 410, as well as a 48/50 and 49/50 in the Doubles - not a bad weekend Stephen! Class Champions included Chuck Farnham (A1), Steve Haynie (B1), Chuck Reller (C1) and Javier Caicedo (D1).

The Doubles Event

The Doubles Event was conducted as a 50 target event, and 8 competitors entered. By far the event winner was Stephen Hendren with a 48 of 50. Stephen also shot a "preliminary" 50 targets of Doubles to help pace a small squad and posted a 49 of 50. Great shooting Stephen! Class Champs were Fohlbrook (A), Haynie (B), Jerry Arroyo (C) and Javier Caicedo (D).

The High Over All Event

The Grand PooBah Overall Mac-Daddy winner of the 2008 Opener, and namesake of the 2009 Opener was Chuck Fohlbrook. Runner Up went to Stephen Hendren ("Mr. Consistant"). Third went to "former" namesake Steve Haynie, who's only comments were unintelligible mutterings about "wait till next year". Alas, fame is fleeting...Class Champs were Chuck Reller and Steven Sagal.
