November 4th and 5th, 2006 The easterly breeze tracked across the fields from "low-to-high" causing the targets to perform acrobatic feats that astounded and amazed all viewers. High 1 and Low 7 became "difficult" targets and Station 8, well, watch your head! High house targets were a bit low if the wind subsided, but soared like the Space Shuttle if a real gust came along. Low house targets stayed low so often it was once mistaken for a Sporting Clays rabbit. Not for the faint of heart or weak of average. We were short handed, and sometimes short tempered, as the new skeet year started, but it turned out well. Thanks to David Alexandrich , Arressa Rosenzweig, and Vonda Haynie for all the help in making the event go for all the shooters. Complete results at the bottom of this page. DoublesThe Doubles event was a perfect example of the effects of the wind. High score and event winner was turned in by Steve Haynie, and was only an 86. Fred Adrio was Runner Up with an 84 (good to see you again Fred!) and Chuck Fohlbrook took 3rd with an 82. These scores are easily several targets below average, mostly because the targets were vertically unpredictable. While all agreed it was exciting and many great shots were made, we all agreed it would take a long time to work those scores out of the averages! 12 GaugeScores in the big gun were more typical, with Chuck Fohlbrook capturing the Gun Champ crown with a 97, a fabulous score in the conditions. Thanks to Chuck for making the trip and bringing Fred and Stan! Runner up was an ailing Chuck Farnham with a 95, and 3rd went to Skeet Co-Chairman Steve Haynie with a 94. Fred Adrio took C1 with a 91 and Tony Cicchirillo took D1. The real story of this event was Arressa Rosenzwieg, brand new NSSA member and E1 winner with a 78. Arressa worked very hard to get time off to get time off from her job at the range to join in our shoot. Arressa also was Junior 12 ga. champ, with Ken Stewart as runner up. 20 GaugeGeoff Peters fought off a scratchy throat and made the trip down to capture the 20 Gauge Gun Championship with an outstanding 96. Remember that that 96 was in winds that would have challenged the top tier shooters, so doing it with a gun he had never shot before just adds to the " Darth Vaders" mystique. If we could only keep him away from the "Dark Side"! Runner up was Steve Haynie with a 95, winning the tie-breaker with 3rd Place Glen Rieske and AA1 Harvey Zipkin, each also posting a 95. Way to plan those misses Steve! Class Champs were Chuck Fohlbrook (A1), John stewart (B1), Myles Spodak (C1) and Arressa Rosenzwieg captured D1 and Junior 20 Gauge Champ with a nice 83. 28 GaugeThe 28 gauge event was shot in the afternoon and the wind was perhaps even stronger than when the 12 gauge was contested earlier that day. Chuck Fohlbrook once again reached down deep and pulled out a stellar 97 to take the Championship. Runner Up Steve Haynie managed to put up a 95, and "Surprising" John Stewart captured 3rd with a 92. Class Champions were Chuck Farnham (A1), and Fred Adrio (C1). New NSSA member and D Class Champion Rinaldo Cartaya entered all 5 events and was a valuable help in getting all the shooters out there in all the gauges - Thanks again!
410 BoreThe 410 is shot last to keep suspense in the HOA and HAA events, as even in the best of weather it can break hearts. The setup was perfect for Chuck Fohlbrook to take another Markham HOA title after he posted his 91 in the little gun. The closest HOA competitor was Steve Haynie, who would have to post a 94 to tie. In this wind and with an average under 91, the task was ominous. The suspense was building as the wind roared and the crowds gasped as the last squad took the field. OK, ok, enough drama. Haynie played "mute" and ran the first 52, realized he ran the first 52 and (you can guess) missed the 53rd target. Dropping two more in that third box, he shut up and carried the option in box 4 to high eight (duh!) and ended with an event winning 96. Runner up was "Dark Side" Geoff Peters with an outstanding 93 and Fohlbrook's 91 took 3rd. Class Championships went to Glen "Low Eight" Rieske (B1) with 49-of-the-last-50 for a 90, Tony Cicchirillo (C1), and newcomer Rinaldo Cartaya took D1. Arressa Rosenzweig was once again the Junior Champion. Congratulations to all. HOA/HAASteve Haynie's efforts in the 410 Event gave him a 380, and allowed him to capture the HOA Championship for the 2nd Markham event in a row. "Better Lucky Than Good" Haynie denies there is talk of a "dynasty", but was seen grinning from ear to ear! Chuck Fohlbrook's 378 yielded the Runner Up title and the "Under The Weather-Man" Chuck Farnham took 3rd. John Stewart improved to a 351 for C Class Championship and Rookie Rinaldo Cartaya captured D1. High All Around went to Haynie with a 466/500 followed by Chuck Fohlbrook's 460/500 and Rinaldo Cartaya added yet another title of D1/HAA to his impressive first tournament. |
