August 2nd and 3rd, 2008
Almost was the story of the first "Rocky Long Open"
As in Almost a Hundred, or Almost Perfect.
A Big Turnout, Good Scores Rule.
 Next Shoot Oct 4-5, 2008.

The inaugural version of the Rocky Long Open was a resounding success. We hurriedly scheduled this shoot because shooters were asking for one. We had not scheduled any shoot in August for the last several years because of poor attendance. We believed that the weather, vacations and major shoots were drawing off our shooters. Times change, and this is $4 a gallon gas meets Class All American Points Races. Now, 19 shooters shot 6200 targets in very warm and humid weather. That's a mild weather number, what we see in November through April. Perhaps part of the reason so many attended was a desire to support our fellow skeet shooter, Mark Ehnle. What ever the reason, thanks for attending! Many thanks to Rocky Long and his firm, Oroca LLC, for supporting our efforts to raise money for Mark Ehnle this month. Our donations and proceeds exceeded $400 this month to help a fellow shooter. Each and every competitor contributed  to this amount, and we thank them all.

20 Gauge

Andre Williams has been frequenting our shoots, and recently joined the Markham Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays Club. I would encourage all the shooters to join the club if that's what is driving his outstanding scores of late.  Andre missed only one target and put an "almost" up on the board - a 99, and took Gun Champion. Bill Hataway (RU) did not think it should be easy for Andre though, and posted a 99 of his own. Another "almost". Excellent shooting. Thomas Tamayo edged out Bill Ferguson (A1) in a tie breaker of 97's for Third. Class Champs included Tod Bowman, Robert Vazquez, Steve Sagal and Jason Tresslar.

410 Bore

The 410 is shot as our second gun of the first day now, but we will probably change the shoot order before next shoot. Too many shooters are not asking "what guns are today?", and frankly, we miss it....A lightning warning forced us to delay the start of this event, but there was just enough time for us to finish the day. Thanks to the Markham range staff for letting us get all the events in.  David Lee has been on a tear lately with the little gun, and today was no exception. His 96 (three targets better than his 20 gauge score!) was tops in the little gun, and again Bill Hataway was pushing the top. Bill posted a 94 for Runner Up, with Andre williams right behind at 93. Excellent shooting at Markham. Congratulations to all. Class winners included our generous sponsor, Rocky Long, as well as Larry Burch, Thomas Tamayo, and Tod Bowman.

Doubles

The Doubles event was a bit hurried at the end of the day, but everyone was able to compete. It seems only fitting that Rocky Long would pull a 48 out of 50 from that hat of his, then beat powerhouse veteran Tod Bowman in a shoot off to take the Gun title. No good deed goes unrewarded! Behind Bowman was David Lee at 47 for Third. Andre Williams took the A class crown, Howard Chin captured the crowded B class, and Steve Sagal drove his way to D class honors. Day one in the books and we're all still here!

28 Gauge

Day two dawned prettier and warmer, if that was possible. Scores grew up pretty too. The 28 gauge event saw a 98 from David Lee (CH), two 97's from RU Nicholas Azan and 3rd Steve Haynie, and 96's and 95's all the way to B class. Phil Campbell (AA1) and Gary Stoye (A1) both posted 96's, and Larry Burch's 95 took B class honors. Jason Tresslar took another Class title in C class. Thanks again to all!

12 Gauge

Scores in the big gun at Markham rarely include that elusive third digit, remaining instead "almost" there. Today was no exception, as perfection flirted with three shooters into the third box. Nick Azan (3rd) carried the chance of a 100 to station 2 of box three, Steve Haynie (RU) managed to miss the low 4 in that box, and Tod Bowman (CH) made it all the way to box 4, station 4 before giving it up. Almost, again and again! Class winners were Phil Campbell, Andre Williams, Rocky Long and Jason Tresslar. Someone should find that evil "spirit of the lake" that protects Markham's reputation as a tough course, and, and, -- and ask her nicely if she wants to go visit somewhere else....100's are sure hard to come by here.

And the HOA winner is...

Seems in every gun I mentioned two guys that are relatives - David Lee and Andre Williams. It figures when you are near the top in every event, you'll do well in the aggregate. Andre Williams (CH) 383 edged out David Lee (RU) 382, and they were followed by Steve Haynie (3rd) with a 378. They were followed by Class winners Tod Bowman, Thomas Tamayo and Ralph Long. Seems there are some new "Sherriff's" in town, and the old guard guys better watch out! Congrats to all who attended.

OTHER NEWS:

OUR WEB SITE PRE-SQUAD FORM has been changed and improved. Please visit the new page and give us enough info to schedule you. As usual, your input is appreciated.

SHOOT ORDER continues to be a lively topic and it seems that what the shooters want is at least some consistency between the program at our sister club, Trail Trap and Skeet, and us. With one noticeable exception, all the input we have received points toward this order: 28 then 12 then Doubles on Saturday, and 20 and 410 on Sunday. It seems that is convenient for "tube set" shooters and keeps some suspense in the final outcome. In addition, shooting the little gun last give you a chance to "sneak up" on it, get your mind right and all that! What are your thoughts? Are you listening everyone? There is a good chance we'll change the order in October, so stay tuned! (I'll have to change that pre-squad form then...hmmm)

PRICES for tournament targets are going up by $2 per hundred - again. We managed to avoid passing on the increase last time, but we will make an adjustment in our fees at our October shoot. Instead of an outright increase in event fees, we will absorb the increased costs of targets and refreshments with a "first gun" fee as posted last month, currently planned as $8.00.  If you have input and want to discuss you ideas for dealing with rising costs, we welcome constructive discussion, but we must deal with the numbers.

SCHEDULED DATES are submitted to FSA and NSSA, having been approved by the County already. We are planning more shoots next year, so keep shooting with us! While we have gotten some excellent support from the core group of organizers (myself, Glen Rieske, Steven Sagal and Rocky Long) additional help is appreciated, so feel free to offer. Take a turn giving something back to the shooters, it makes all this possible. Get involved in giving something to help your sport thrive. Thanks to all those who do help.

NEXT SHOOT IS OCTOBER 4th and 5th, 2008. Be there, and bring that straight with you!
