
SCHAFMEISTER, VINCENT J., of Miramar, FL, passed away
peacefully after a brief illness on July 4, 2008
Born in Harrisburg, July 14, 1923, son of Frances Dunlap and
Vincent Joseph Schafmeister. He is survived by his loving wife of 29
years, Carole, his children Vincent J. Schafmeister, III of Thouare sur
Loire, France, and his wife, Christine Bougoin, daughter Linda Heimburg
of Wayne, NJ, and her husband Bob , three grandchildren, Jeffrey and
Benjamin Schafmeister of France and Lindsay Heimburg of NJ, nieces
Brenda Hulse, Dawn Hulse and sister- in-law Nancy Hulse.
He passed away on Independence Day, the same day that his relative,
John Dunlap, developed the paper by which the Declaration of
Independence was printed on. (Known as Dunlap Broadsides). He graduated
from Camp Hill High School attended Kiski Prep and Dickinson College. A
World War II Veteran he joined the Army, was transferred to the U.S.
Navy where he served as a Lt. Commander in the Aleutians.
After an honorable discharge he returned to Dickinson College where
he played basketball and football and graduated with a Bachelors Degree
in l949. One of his first jobs was with WERI radio station in Westerly,
RI, where he had a show called "The King, the Count and the Duke"
featuring sounds of Count Basie, Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington.
He then joined the staff of the Westerly Sun newspaper where he wrote
a daily sports column under the byline of Vin Collie. He advanced to the
Sports Editor.
In l964 he accepted a position at his alma mater and returned to
Dickinson.
Having demonstrated remarkable ability with fundraising he then held
a series of positions in the medical arena beginning with Geisinger
Medical Center in Danville, PA and St. Peters Hospital, Albany, NY and
Atlantic City Medical Center in NJ. In 1982 he and his wife Carole moved
to Florida where he became the Director of Development of the North
Shore Medical Center Foundation a position he held for 17 years. Other
institutions he managed were Director of Development of Miami Country
Day School and Development Consultant Dade Christian School and
Executive Director of the FACE Foundation. Considered the "guru of fund
raising", he raised millions of dollars for his institutions. He was a
member of the Miami Shores Rotary, Recently received The Most Worshipful
Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Florida for 60 years -
Village Lodge 315 of Miami Shores. Other affiliations: Seventh Ave.
Business Assn., North Miami Mayor's Task Force. A memorial service was
held on July 12, 2008 at 11 am at the New Testament Baptist Church -
6601 NW 167 Street, Miami Lakes, FL 33015. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the "FACE FOUNDATION"- David Stephen Rodriquez Fitness
Center in care of the church, marked in honor of Vince Schafmeister. To
